Lee County federal prison inmates get an additional 5 years for May escape
Two prison inmates who walked away from a U.S. Penitentiary in Lee County, Virginia, earlier this year and were later captured in Mexico City had additional prison time tacked-on to their current sentences by a federal judge.
Salah Mohamed, 36, and Kamal Qazah, 38, both pleaded guilty in August to a total of four felony counts after being indicted and charged with the escape on May 3, according to court information.
Qazah was being held in the Pennington Gap facility for money laundering while Mohamed was serving time for possession with intent to distribute cocaine, court records show.
Prosecutors said Mohamed made a phone call from the prison on April 25 to a person in Yemen to secure forged passports for the pair. They remained at-large for 20 days until they were captured in Mexico.
