Local grocers prepare for the Super Bowl rush


Statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture says Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest food consumption day of the year behind Thanksgiving.

That means area grocery retailers must have extra supplies of snack inventory and other items to meet demand for those planning a get together around the Falcons and Patriots.

Food City manager Jamie Vaughn says their shelves at the Euclid Avenue location are usually restocked for things like chicken wings, potato chips and assorted drinks including beer because of the amount of consumers planning parties.

A report obtained by News 5 compiled by the National Retail Federation shows people in the U.S. plan to spend an average of $75 for Super Bowl related parties or activities- adding up to $14.1 billion.

The majority of those surveyed will purchase food and drinks while 11 percent will buy team-branded merchandise and 8 percent plan to make this the weekend they invest in a new television, the report said.
