Man charged with hate crime after pulling woman from car

Police in Virginia have charged a white man with a hate crime after, they say, he intentionally struck a car and pulled the black driver from the vehicle. Chesterfield County police say 27-year-old Matthew Ellis began shouting at the driver last week while she was waiting to make a turn. Authorities say the woman pulled away but Ellis followed and rear-ended her car. Police say Ellis pulled the woman out of her car. Authorities say others went to the woman's aid, and she was able to run away and call police from a nearby building. Ellis is charged with hate-crime assault, abduction, assaulting a law enforcement officer, and other offenses. His lawyer did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
