Mine rescue teams compete for Governor's Cup
WISE COUNTY, Va. —
Mining rescue teams across the region competed for the top title of the Governor's Cup Thursday in Wise County.
The competition may be less about bragging rights, than it is about meeting federal regulations. Each mine rescue team is required to complete two competitions annually.
The competitions simulate real emergencies and help train responders how to deal with those conditions before a group of judges.
"There's rules to abide by that come just from basic, solid mine rescue practices, so that each one of those safety precautions we're checking to make sure all of the teams do those like they should," Chris Witt said. Witt serves as emergency manager for the Department of Mines Minerals and Energy.
The Wellmore Coal Company Red Team ended up winning the 32nd annual cup.
