News 5, Food City, and generous customers team up to help Harvey victims

News 5 and Food City are leading the way to help people affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Those fundraising efforts have paid off. A check for $150,000 was presented to Samaritan's Purse Thursday to help recovery efforts.

This money will be used to help people who are uninsured or disadvantaged repair and rebuild their homes. It's all thanks to customers of Food City who donated at the register.

"One of the neatest things that we see in America is when people from communities that aren't affected by these kinds of storms, or fires or tornadoes or whatever, help their neighbors across the country. That's huge. It's amazing to see that happen," Jim Loscheider with Samaritan's Purse said.

Food City collected a total of $450,000 in the effort.

Donations are also going to the Salvation Army and the Houston Food Bank.
