One injured after inmates fight at Lee Co. federal prison
A prisoner at Lee County's U.S. Penitentiary in Pennington Gap had to be transported to an area hospital following an altercation Monday morning where a guard fired his service weapon.
A report from the U.S. Department of Justice said the fight happened just after 8 a.m. in the prison's recreation yard involving a total of four inmates including one that was carrying a homemade weapon.
One inmate was shot in the upper right arm by the guard and then taken out for medical treatment, the report said. The facility was placed on limited operating status until further notice. There are more than 1,200 male offenders housed at the prison.
