Police pursuit ends in crash


WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. - News 5 is following a developing story out of Damascus, Va.

Damascus Police Chief Mike Hounshell says around 9:30 p.m. Friday night, an officer was traveling northbound on South Shady Avenue, when he noticed a woman driving southbound without her tail lights on.

The officer pursued her and she led police on a chase that lasted about a mile.

That's when police say the woman drove off the roadway and wrecked her car.

The woman was identified as 27-year-old Frances Grant of Abingdon, Va.

She was transported to the hospital and is OK.

She is now in the Abingdon Regional Jail and charged with felony eluding, possession of schedule II narcotics, and driving under the influence.

Grant will be arraigned Monday.

She is awaiting her arraignment without bond.

Police say there was also a passenger in the car at the time of the crash and they were not injured.
