Police: Sleeping duo found with meth, high-powered rifle in truck
Two men are behind bars on drug and other charges after police say they found them asleep with a rifle in a truck near Emory & Henry College.
According to Washington County Virginia Sheriff Fred Newman, police responded to a call around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday about a suspicious vehicle near the school. The truck was in a parking lot directly across from Macado's restaurant.
Deputies found two men asleep in a pickup truck. A lever-action, high-powered rifle with a scope was seen lying beside the driver's right leg. A K-9 indicated to police the possibility that there were drugs in the vehicle. A search revealed a substance believed to be meth in the truck.
Joseph Hunter Hayden Boyd, 25, of Glade Spring, was arrested and charged with possession of meth and possession of brass knuckles.
Austin Wayne Helton, 19, of Abingdon, was arrested and charged with possession of meth and possession of meth while in possession of a firearm.
Both men are being held in the Abingdon facility of the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail without bond.
