Suspect arrested after leading Washington County, VA deputies on a high speed chase
An Abingdon man is facing multiple charges after police say he led them on a high speed chase on Saturday.
Washington County, Virginia Sheriff Fred Newman says 19-year-old Dakota Wesley Smith was going 101 miles per hour on Lee High, about a mile north of Jeb Stuart Highway. When deputies began pursuing, they say Smith failed to stop and turned onto Jeb Stuart Highway in an attempt to get away. However, the suspect crashed near the intersection of Jeb Stuart Highway at Watauga Road. Smith is now charged with Felony Eluding, Driving Under the Influence and Reckless Driving.
Sheriff Newman says Smith was previously wanted on felony charges in Washington County, including Grand Larceny and Statutory Burglary.
