UPDATE: Abingdon nurse practitioner facing 56-count federal indictment
A federal grand jury has handed down a 56-count indictment against an Abingdon nurse practitioner accused of distributing a narcotic illegally.
Matthew Sykes was indicted on 56 counts for distribution of controlled substances, according to court documents. The criminal complaint says Sykes had been under investigation for more than eight months while working at Watauga Recovery in Abingdon.
He is accused of writing a prescription to a patient for roxicodone and receiving pills in an exchange for the prescription. The complaint says Sykes was terminated from Watauga Recovery on May 1. He was arrested earlier this month.
