UPDATE: Bristol, VA teen identified as train accident victim
A teenager was identified as the victim who was hit by a train Sunday evening in downtown Abingdon, said a report released by the town's Police Department on Monday.
The 17-year-old from Bristol, Virginia, whose name was not released, made contact with the front of the train near a rail crossing on Trigg Street in the downtown area, according to witness accounts reported to police.
Emergency and police personnel discovered the teen's body on the tracks approximately 200 feet west of the designated grade cross just after 8:30 p.m..
The fatal hit marked the third railroad-related fatality in the downtown area in the last 11 months.
Curtis Robinson, 71, was killed when he was hit by the train in March. Brian Kenneth Jessee, 44, also suffered a fatal injury on the tracks in June. Those incidents took place near the Preston Road area.
Norfolk Southern Railway Police are still investigating Sunday's incident, the report said.
