UPDATE: Charges filed in Marion shooting from last month

Marion police have filed charges in connection with a shooting which occurred on September 22 on Cemetery Street.

According to the investigation, shots had been fired and one person had been injured. Officers later found a suspect suffering from two gunshot wounds. The suspect was taken to Smyth County Community Hospital.

Investigators said the resident, William Sheets, encountered two men in his home. A struggle ensued which extended to outside the residence, and eventually to a motor vehicle. Sheets fired several shots, resulting in William Randall Jones, 30, suffering two non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Jones, and Lon Jeffery Mulkey, 37, were each charged with burglary and attempted petit larceny. Both are being held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon.

William Andrew Sheets, 34, has been charged with unlawful wounding and firing into an occupied vehicle. He is currently out on bond.

The incident remains under investigation.

"Their assistance on the night of this incident led to a speedy close to a difficult situation, and it's that community policing that makes us proud, as we work to protect and serve our citizens."
