UPDATE: Food City officials break ground on controversial Abingdon site
Officials with K-VA-T Food Stores held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday afternoon for a new Food City location in Abingdon- a project that has been met with controversy since its inception.
The new store is located in the Exit 17 area of the town and located within a short distance of the Virginia Creeper hiking and biking trail. That acreage has been the source of much debate because of impacts, in view of some, to history and to economic development.
A lawsuit was filed by the Friends of Abingdon organization to try and stop the project. That suit was struck down in Washington County, Virginia Circuit Court.
News 5's Tiana Bohner is in Abingdon and will have a live report all this evening.
