UPDATE: Suspect captured after fleeing traffic stop in Bristol VA


UPDATE, 8:00 p.m.

An official with the Bristol Virginia Police Dept. confirmed with News 5 that Robert Colton was captured just after 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Colton was one of four individuals who were part of a traffic stop earlier in the afternoon at a convenience store on East Valley Drive involving the Virginia State Police.

He reportedly ran from the scene as the trooper was questioning the individuals. One of the men was peppered sprayed by the officer.

Colton was caught on Meadow Drive within the city limits.

Two of the four individuals were questioned and then released from police custody. Colton and another suspect are facing potential charges.


UPDATE, 6:27 p.m.

Helicopters are being used in the search for Robert Colton, who fled from police after a traffic stop off of East Valley Drive Wednesday afternoon.

Officials with Bristol Virginia Police Department told News 5 that two of the three suspects were released from police custody after they were interviewed by officers.

Early reports indicated that a Virginia State Police trooper was assaulted but we later learned that one of the suspects was resisting the officer's commands. No injuries were reported.


UPDATE, 4;52 p.m.

The Bristol VA Police Department has released some details about the suspect they are searching for following an incident at the Roadrunner BP on East Valley Drive.

The suspect is described as a white male standing 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds with short brown hair. He was last seen wearing a white tank top, plaid shorts and brown shoes or boots.

UPDATE: 4:37 p.m.

A spokesperson for the Virginia State Police confirmed that a trooper was not injured or assaulted following a traffic stop on East Valley Drive.

SWAT teams continue to comb the area near the Roadrunner BP for a suspect who reportedly fled the scene on foot. Three people are in custody.

Officers with the Bristol Virginia Police Department have converged on a convenience store parking lot located off East Valley Drive after reports of an officer being assaulted.

Preliminary information from the agency supplied to News 5 said a trooper with the Virginia State Police was conducting a traffic stop just after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Roadrunner Market BP when he was hit by a suspect.

SWAT Team personnel are also on the scene. Officers are looking for another suspect who fled on foot.
