Sheriff Fred Newman has now called the discovery of a man's body Thursday morning at a Bristol, Virginia, apartment complex a homicide investigation.

Steven Jeremy Hafen, 39, died from violent trauma to the head, according to a preliminary investigation by the Sheriff's Office at the dwelling in the 4200 block of Reedy Creek Road. The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

Family members contacted police when Hafen had not been heard from since Wednesday, Newman said. An attempt to gain entry into his apartment was unsuccessful and officials were then called in to dismantle the door and that is when Hafen's body was found in the living room.

The department has not released any information on a motive or possible suspects.
