UPDATE: Coeburn murder suspect dead of self-inflicted gunshot wound
Wise Co. Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Slemp said U.S Highway 23 remains shut down as a domestic violence case turned violent with a Coeburn couple now dead.
Slemp said Todd Richardson of Coeburn told police dispatchers that he had shot his estranged wife Veronica Webb Richardson just after 10 a.m. Sunday. She was found dead in the front yard of the couple's home located on Grace Covenant Road located outside of Coeburn
A warrant for Richardson's arrest on first-degree murder was then secured, the attorney said.
At 7:16 p.m., Richardson's vehicle was seen traveling on U.S. Route 23 in Scott County in Angler's Way when a pursuit began, Slemp said. An officer said speeds during the chase exceeded 100 miles per hour.
The chase ended in Weber City near Burger King where Richardson stopped. Responding officers tried to make contact with the suspect and get him out of the vehicle, he said.
At 7:53 p.m., officers approached the vehicle that had been stopped in the southbound lanes and found Richardson dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"There are no winners today. This is a tragic case," Slemp said.
Col. Grant Kilgore of the Wise Co. Sheriff's Office said Richardson had reportedly contacted his wife and told her she could come to their home in Coeburn and collect her personal items. Veronica Richardson arrived at the residence with family members when Todd Richardson came into the home through a back entrance and produced a weapon, Kilgore said.
The victim and family members then tried to run away from the gunman when he shot her, Kilgore said. Slemp noted that Todd Richardson had confessed to a Wise Co. investigator that he had killed his wife hours after the shooting.
A post made by the Wise County Sheriff's Office on their official social media account says Todd Richardson "has been located" and there is "no longer a threat to public safety."
Police officials have announced they will have a news conference at 9 p.m. EST on Sunday night to discuss the sighting of Todd Richardson in Scott County, Virginia.
