Wise County Sheriff takes delivery of body cams for officers
Wise County, Virginia Sheriff Ronnie Oakes announced Wednesday that three grants will enable his department to equip deputies with body cameras by the end of this month.
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Criminal Justice Services are providing the capital for the deputies' cameras assigned to patrol, school resource, civil process, criminal investigations and courthouse security, the report said.
Oakes noted that the new systems will work in-concert with in-car cameras systems that have already been employed for years with the county's patrol division.
"These cameras will help protect them from any false complaints, and the video captured will also help in the prosecution of cases," the sheriff said.
Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Slemp said in a prepared statement that the new body cams will serve as great tools for the courtroom and provide transparency for the public good.
