Fairmont State rolls past UVa-Wise


FAIRMONT, W.Va. - Fairmont State University shutout UVa-Wise in the second half to roll to a 34-6 win on Duvall-Rosier Field on Saturday. Holding a 13-6 lead after halftime, the Falcons put up seven points in the third quarter and scored 14 in the fourth to secure the victory. The Cavaliers struck first in the contest using a 31-yard field goal by Trevor Owens. JuJuan Young-Battle capped a seven-play, 72-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run to give Fairmont State its first lead of the game and a 7-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. UVa-Wise (3-2, 3-2) answered back with 4:19 on the clock in the second quarter behind another 31-yard field goal by Owens. In the final minute of play before halftime, Quincy Redmon recovered a fumble and ran it back 96 yards for a 13-6 Falcon advantage. Fairmont State (4-1, 4-0) controlled the momentum for the remainder of the contest. Jeff Iweh hauled in an eight-yard touchdown pass at the 5:16 mark to push Fairmont State head 20-6. Laurence King snagged a two-yard touchdown pass at the start of the fourth quarter and Rakeem Darden capped a five-play 39-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Falcons a 34-6 advantage. Fairmont State held UVa-Wise to 43 yards rushing on the day while piling up 122 yards on the ground. Darden tallied nine carries for 73 yards with King adding 22 yards on two carries. Terrell Charles totaled 13 yards on 26 carries. Young-Battle completed seven of 16 pass attempts for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Andre Hall grabbed two passes for 29 yards followed by Iweh with two receptions for 25 yards. Jarome Johnson charted a team-high 46 yards on 16 carries while also completing 14 of 29 passes for 126 yards. Chris Thaxton hauled in six passes for 42 yards followed by Kaian Duverger with 35 yards on two receptions.
