The Backstretch Blog's Race Day: Firekeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway

NASCAR heads nirth to Michigan this weekend. This is a two mile, hammer down, intermediate track. Which means keep your eyes on all the usual suspects. Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex, Jr. and Kyle Larson should all once again be fast this weekend. Larson swept the two races at MIS last season.

“I still feel like (Kevin) Harvick, Kyle (Busch) and (Martin) Truex (Jr.) are probably your favorites, but I’m sure I’m a part of that group just based off of our last three races here at Michigan with the wins," said Larson. "Our car has been fast here lately and especially here at Michigan. Hopefully, we can put a nice race together and try and just be in position like we have been for the other three races for the late race restarts and try and take advantage of them. And hopefully get another win. It would be cool to get four in a row.”

But none of those guys will be on the pole Sunday. That honor goes to Kurt Busch.

“This one is fun because I could trust the car and I knew I needed to go after it hard," said the elder Busch. "Now we need to translate that to race speed. I enjoy qualifying here. It is a pleasure to have one of these Fords and have Yates power under the hood. To go 217 mph, to haul the mail going into the corner I love that feeling.”

Brad Keselowski will start next to Kurt on the front row. Kyle Busch, Harvick and Joey Logano round out the top five starters. Larson starts 26th. Virginia natives Denny Hamlin and Gray Gauding start 11th and 3344th respectively.

The green flag drops on the Firekeepers 400 at 2:16 pm. You can watch the race on our sister station FOX Tricities WEMT.
