Abuse charges upgraded against Johnson City woman accused of putting baby in freezer
A Sessions Court judge in Washington County, Tennessee has upgraded charges and said a case will go forward involving a Johnson City teen accused of placing her baby inside a freezer.
A $100,000 bond was also issued to 19-year-old Brittany Smith during those proceedings which included amending her charges to aggravated child abuse and neglect, according to court information obtained by WCYB. She's also charged with burglary.
Homeowner Joshua Blair told News 5's Caleb Perhne that he thought the child was dead at first and witnessed Smith place the child in the freezer standing in the yard. He found the infant laying in the cooler that did have water on the inside and later discovered Smith hiding under his home.
Blair also said that if not for his mother spotting the teen in their yard, the story may have ended different.
Smith is due back in court on April 1.
