Appalachian Power installing 49K new electric meters for customers
New installations of power meters in the Kingsport service area are taking place this week, according to Appalachian Power.
The radio frequency or RF meters are being replaced with advanced metering infrastructure meters that allows customer meters to be read using cell phone technology that can aid in situations like having power service restored quickly and detecting electric outages, the company said in a report issued Monday.
Customers can expect a brief power outage while contract workers switch out meters. They will not be required to come inside homes, the company reported.
