Bluff City police: Man busted after going back for tools he left behind in burglary
BLUFF CITY, Tenn. —
A man is behind bars after authorities said he stole a truck and burglarized a business before going back into the business to retrieve tools he left behind.
According to the Bluff City Police Department, a truck was stolen from Chaparral on Highway 11E. That truck was recovered Saturday around 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Elizabethton Food City.
On Monday around 7:15 a.m., police responded to an alarm at Auto Liquidators in Bluff City. An officer saw a man, later identified as Jason Chad Hammonds of Elizabethton, running out of the front door. Police said Hammonds was found in a barn and taken into custody.
Police said Hammonds had a truck started and running, but went back into the business to retrieve some burglary tools he left behind. Authorities said they found the key to the stolen pickup truck in his pocket.
Hammonds was charged with two counts of theft over $10,000, burglary, vandalism, possession of burglary tools, evading arrest, and violation of parole. He is due in court next week.
