Elizabethton, TN — The man who Carter County authorities say reported seeing a child in the Watauga River last week has been arrested.
32-year-old Landon Wayne Garland was arrested Wednesday by sheriff's deputies on two charges related to violating the Tennessee Child Sex Offender Registry laws.
According to sheriff's department reports, Garland was arrested without incident Wednesday at a home on Lovers Lane.
Authorities say Garland reported trying to save a child he saw floating in the water.
He told us he jumped into the water and could only grab a backpack off the little girl.
Emergency crews were called and spent several hours searching the water. However, authorities believe Garland was mistaken.
Sheriff Dexter Lunceford tells us Garland has made several bogus calls to his department over the past several years.
He has not been charged in connection to the river incident.
The charges on the Sex Offender Registry show a conviction from 2015 of Aggravated Statutory Rape.
