Charges pending in fatal Washington County, Va. interstate crash
Charges are pending in a fatal Washington County, Virginia, crash which occurred on Interstate 81 north of Old Airport Road.
According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred early Friday morning when a Dodge Ram failed to reduce its speed for traffic that had been slowed down for highway work. The Ram rear ended a Mazda MX-5 which caused the Mazda to strike a Chevrolet Silverado.
The driver of the Mazda, a 24-year-old Louisville, Kentucky, woman and her three passengers were all taken to Bristol Regional Medical Center. One of the passengers, 19-year-old Sierra Watson of Louisville, Kentucky, died from her injuries on Tuesday. Watson was the only person in the Mazda not wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Ram, a 24-year-old Abingdon man, suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.
The driver of the Silverado was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. Alcohol did not play a role in the crash.
