Friends remember VSP Trooper killed in the line of duty; Funeral arrangements made

Trooper Dowell, Courtest of Alyssa King

CHILHOWIE, Va--Funeral arrangements have been announced for the Virginia State trooper from Chilhowie who was killed in the line of duty Monday night.

28-year- old Lucas Dowell was executing a search warrant just outside of Farmville, Virginia with a tactical unit. An adult male identified as Corey Johnson, 44, began to shoot at the team. Johnson was killed at the scene.

Trooper Dowell was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

One of Dowell’s childhood friends, Alyssa King, said Dowell had a big heart, and was always smiling.

"He cared for everyone,” she said. “Whether he knew you or not."

Dowell graduated VSP’s 122nd Basic Session in November 2014. After graduation he was assigned to Virginia State Police’s Appomattox Division. His latest assignment was on patrol in Area 20, which encompasses the City of Lynchburg, and Amherst and Campbell Counties.

"He always talked about being a US Marshall or working for the FBI,” said King. “When we were little we would play with the guns and pretend we were FBI agents.”

Sen. Bill Carrico said in a statement on the Senate floor Tuesday that he was friends with the Dowell family.

"He's the true image of a state trooper,” said Carrico.

Carrico, who was a former state trooper himself, called Dowell a friend.

"He had impeccable character, an outstanding athlete a great brother to his sister Erica."

King said it is still hard to believe, but that she is a better person for knowing him.

"The first thing I did was look back at my phone...and I realized he never opened the last message I sent him.’s just kind of hard to really grasp that he was gone."

Visitation for Trooper Dowell will be held Friday from 2:00 p.m., until 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m., until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m, with a burial to follow.
