UPDATE: 1 p.m. Friday:

The search for the alligator on the loose near Gate City is over.

A photo taken by a resident interviewed by News 5's Mike Lucas shows the gator along with officers with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

We'll have more information this afternoon on News 5 on-air and online.

The search is on for a 3-foot long alligator spotted in a Scott County, Va. creek.

According to Scott County emergency management director Jeff Brickey, a caller said they saw the gator in Big Moccasin Creek about 4 p.m. Thursday.

That's near the Mill Dam off Slabtown Circle.

Brickey said they believe it escaped from a person with a private collection of reptiles.

Virginia state game wardens are looking for the animal.
