{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}With more cold weather headed our way, your car could be at risk. That's why it's a good idea to get your battery checked.

{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}Browns Mill Auto Service in Johnson City gets dozens of calls in the winter for dead batteries.

{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}"Dead battery calls for the tow side of the business: we'll probably get about 10 to 15 of those a week," manager Richard Yeager said.

{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}"A lot of times with the battery you'll come out, and you have a dead battery,” Friendship Ford and Volvo service manager Matthew Bryant said. “You won't be able to start your vehicle."

{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}A little maintenance can prevent a lot of hassle.

{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}"This time of year, when it's cold, older batteries don't like the cold,” Yeager said. “I do highly recommend going by, having your battery checked."

{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}Batteries aren't the only concern. Coolant and tire pressure can also be affected by temperature.

{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}"If you don't have the proper amount of coolant in your vehicle, it could cause your engine to overheat,” Bryant said. “Then you could actually end up having to replace your whole engine."

{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}Most auto repair shops offer battery and coolant checks free of charge. You may also want to check your tire pressure.

{p style="margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin:0in 0in 8pt"}"If the weather's coming up and there's a chance there's going to be snow, that's one of the things you do want to check,” Yeager said. “You want make sure you do have good tread on your tires. It's more important in the winter than it is in the summer."

{p style="margin:0in 0in 8pt"}Maintaining air pressure can lower your likelihood of damaging your tires.
