New transportation training center to be built in Buchanan County, Virginia
A new training center is being established in Southwest Virginia that will allow students to become certified in several transportation-based fields.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday for the Southern Gap Transportation and Logistics Center in Buchanan County on Route 460- a $5 million facility that will provide training in such areas as diesel repair and classes that will allow drivers to obtain CDL licenses.
The project will include a 35,100-square foot building with training bays, lab and classroom space and a 2.5-acre paved training track for trucks, according to officials.
Organizers said the facility will provide a direct pipeline for residents who want jobs in maintenance and driving 18-wheelers. Truck drivers and mechanics are in high demand nationally with some positions having a starting salary of $40,000 per year.
The partnership will include a curriculum set by officials at Southwest Virginia Community College.
