Northam to make first appearance since scandal at funeral for State Trooper in Chilhowie
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam is expected to make his first public appearance in Southwest Virginia on Saturday since a racist yearbook page controversy surfaced one week ago.
According to a report from NBC affiliate WAVY, Northam will be in Chilhowie for the funeral of State Trooper Lucas Dowell. The service is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Smyth County.
The Associated Press said Northam had been conducting state business in Richmond by using underground tunnels this week to stay out of the public eye after deciding not to resign when his 1980s medical school yearbook page surfaced and shows a person in blackface and another person in a KKK robe and hood.
Northam reportedly told his senior staffers that he does not plan to resign from office despite numerous calls from national Democratic Party officials.
