Officials: At least 6 crashes attributed to sinkhole on I-81 in Smyth County

UPDATE: 8:50 a.m.

We are getting our first looks at the Smyth County sinkhole which has caused at least six crashes on Interstate 81, according to officials.

Crews are working to repair the sinkhole, and traffic is slow-moving near mile marker 40 northbound on Interstate 81.

The left shoulder and left lane is closed and VDOT is conducting an emergency road repair.

We'll have updates as they come in.


Traffic is backing up on Interstate 81 northbound in Smyth County.

Virginia State Police says a pothole or sinkhole developed in the left hand lane near mile marker 40.

Troopers are working emergency officials described as a "significant" number of crashes.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says online the left shoulder and left travel lane are closed.

An emergency road repair is under way.
