Woman killed in Rogersville fire Monday morning

A house fire in Rogersville left one woman dead due to smoke inhalation.

Officials say 81-year old Peggy Bird was in her house when a fire broke out in her living room.

The Rogersville Fire Department and State Marshals got he call about 3 this morning.

According to firefighters -- inside the house is a total loss.

A neighbors says she woke up to sirens in the middle of the night.

“Last night I wasn’t sure what was going on because it was dark and all I heard were sirens. But this morning there was still one there. And this morning I did smell a bit of a burnt, smokey smell but since I was inside last night I didn’t smell anything,” says neighbor Hannah Kite.

The State Fire Marshal and TBI are investigating the cause of the fire.


A woman has died in a Monday morning house fire in Rogersville.

The call came in just after 3:00 a.m. on Chamber Street, just off of West Main Street near downtown Rogersville.

According to Rogersville authorities, an elderly woman died at the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
