Parents in Mercer charged after toddler weighing only 14 pounds dies
MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — A mother and father have been charged in Mercer County after the death of their malnourished child, who at 21 months of age only weighed 14 pounds, the sheriff’s office said.
Jail records said Corey Steven Moore, 29, and Christy Ann Moore, 26, were arrested on a charge of child neglect resulting in death.
A news release from the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office said an officer responded Nov. 8 to Princeton Community Hospital due to the death of a child. The release said the officer learned the child was brought to the emergency room by his mother, Christy Moore, and due to his condition was taken straight to a room for treatment.
The news release said the child was malnourished, weighing only 14 pounds and was pale and unresponsive. During treatment, a physician requested the child be airlifted to another facility. As a crew from HealthNet was taking the child to the helicopter, his condition worsened and he was taken back to the emergency room. The medical staff attempted to revive the child, but he died.
During interviews with the parents, they said the child became ill with what they believed was a cold around Nov. 1, the news release said. The child lost about 14 to 18 pounds in the next week, refusing to eat some days. His skin became pale, and he could no longer move or hold up his head.
The officer said he asked the couple why they did not seek medical attention, and they could not give an answer at first and then said they made a mistake. When asked when the last time the child had seen a medical practitioner, they said it had been more than a year.
Based on the evidence, the couple was arrested and processed at the sheriff’s office. The Moores are currently being held at Southern Regional Jail on a $25,000 cash only bond.
