Sheriff: Detention officer admits to smuggling narcotics into Washington County Jail
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. —
A detention officer with the Washington County, Tennessee Sheriff's Office was dismissed after he admitted to investigators that he was trying to smuggle contraband including powerful narcotics into the jail complex.
Randy Burke was fired late Thursday, according to a report from Sheriff Ed Graybeal, after officers intercepted a package that Burke carried into the Jonesborough facility as he entered work for his shift.
The package contained methamphetamine, suboxone and subutec, according to the report.
Burke had no prior disciplinary problems and had been a member of the department since March 2015, the sheriff reported.
The former officer was arraigned in Sessions Court Friday afternoon and has another appearance scheduled for July 10, the report said.
