UPDATE: ETSU professor who spread message of hope during brain cancer battle passes away

Chris Dula, pictured here during a July 2017 interview with News 5's Olivia Bailey, passed away on Tuesday, according to an official with ETSU.

Former East Tennessee State University professor Chris Dula died Tuesday following a long battle with brain cancer, school spokesperson Joe Smith confirmed to WCYB.

He said no arrangements have been made yet but they are expected to be held this weekend.

Dula was a longtime psychology professor and author beloved by students.

He called himself a juvenile delinquent in his younger years when discussing his life in a book entitled "Experiments in Life" while speaking with News 5's Olivia Bailey in July 2017 but he also said he was thankful for the path that he was given that led him to friends, family and the ability to help others including being in a band that helped with food drives for the community.

"This seems like God's got a plan in here that I didn't plan this, right? I don't have to understand the plan to know I've got a part to play in it," Dula said.
