A Kentucky inmate who escaped a travel detail near Intestate 26 Tuesday night is facing new charges after he assaulted Sullivan County deputies during his capture.
Rodolfo Vazquez is being held without bond after he was charged with escape, two counts of simple assault, fugitive from justice and resisting arrest, according to a report from the Sheriff's Office.
The suspect was spotted at an abandoned mobile home on Galloway Road in Kingsport Wednesday afternoon and officer converged on the property. Vazquez resisted orders to surrender and tried to push down deputies before being cuffed, the report said.
The prisoner was part of a collection of convicts being transported by a private service when the group stopped at the Tennessee Welcome Center in Kingsport Tuesday evening just before midnight. Vazquez escaped from the restroom area and jumped a fence while eluding the guards. His escaped caused two schools in the area to going into soft lockdown on Wednesday.
Vazquez was being transported to Lee County, Florida to face credit card fraud charges, police reported.
