Details released Thursday by a representative with the Virginia Medical Examiner's Office say a Big Stone Gap police officer shot his cousin and then committed suicide last weekend.

The manner of death for Emeri Connery, 26, was homicide, according to office district administrator Tracy Cooper in a phone interview with WCYB. She stated that Connery was killed by a gunshot to the head.

Officer Bailey Smith shot himself in the head and the manner of death was ruled a suicide, Cooper said.

Their bodies were found inside a crashed pickup truck on Route 23 just after 4 a.m on Sunday, according to the Virginia State Police. VSP spokesperson Corinne Geller told News 5 on Wednesday that the revolver found inside the vehicle was not Smith's service weapon.

State Police also reported late Monday that the case was being investigated as a murder-suicide. WCYB has confirmed that the two were cousins.
