UPDATE: Police say driver fell asleep causing Wilcox Drive crash in Kingsport

(T. Davis, WCYB)

Police said a driver fell asleep behind the wheel Wednesday morning, causing damages that kept Wilcox Drive in Kingsport closed through early afternoon.

Molly Tinkham was charged with failure to exercise due care and failure to provide financial responsibility following the 4 a.m. wreck in the 1000 block of Wilcox, according to a report from the Kingsport Police Department.

After Tinkham fell asleep, her car veered into the left lanes and struck a utility pole and went down an embankment. She refused medical attention at the scene, the report said.

Tinkham was charged with Failure to Exercise Due Care and Failure to Comply with Financial Responsibility (No Insurance).

The roadway was closed from Meadowview Parkway to Jared Drive to allow Appalachian Power to make pole repairs.

Homeowner Tom Marcum said he saw and heard the whole thing happen.

"It started flickering and it just went dark everywhere in the neighborhood," said Marcum.

Homeowners and businesses were without power for hours while crews worked to repair the broken lines.
