UPDATE: U.S. Army Corps agrees to extend whitewater season at Breaks Interstate Park
Adventure seekers wanting more opportunities to ride the rapids at Breaks Interstate Park will get their wish.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced Friday that studies he requested into extra water releases at the John Flannagan Dam and Reservoir in Dickenson County, Virginia have resulted in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers agreeing to add two additional weekends.
The dam already turns out additional water capacity in the four weekends of October but McConnell urged the corp to review those regulations so that the rafting season could be expanded and open up new economic opportunities for tourism and other areas in Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky.
The new release schedule goes into effect this fall.
