A high honor was bestowed upon a John Battle High School teacher in Richmond Friday by her former college schoolmate Delegate Israel O'Quinn.

The lawmaker moved that Friday's session adjourn in honor and memory of Sarah Sanders, a teacher in Battle's history department who helped student for over a decade at the Bristol school. She was killed when her car plunged into the Holston River in Smyth County, according to the Virginia State Police.

O'Quinn, who attended Emory & Henry College at the same time as Sanders, described her as compassionate toward her students and an educator with a great sense of humor.

"Certainly, the John Battle community is grieving today and will for several weeks and months to come," the delegate said as he took the floor. His fellow delegates rose to their feet to pass the measure and honor Sanders.
