Virginia lawmakers are expected to take up the state's budget beginning this week.

Governor Ralph Northam announced earlier this year addressing financial losses from the COVID-19 pandemic was one of the major priorities for calling this summer's special session.

Delegate Terry Kilgore says lawmakers yet to take up the budget issues, but he expects the debate to start this week.

He says the Commonwealth is $2 billion down from projected revenues.

“Last year, we spent a lot of new money on new programs that we hadn’t spent money on before. I think we need to look at those programs first," Kilgore told News 5.

As of right now, the budget has just been assigned to the House Appropriations Committee and Senate Finance Committee.
