FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WZTV) - One Michigan family went on a beach vacation they'll never forget. After making the trek from Battle Creek, Michigan to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Greg Gay was shocked with what he discovered on the beach.

Greg and his family quickly checked into the Ocean Manor Beach Resort and jetted out to the sand to find a giant wooden cross covered in barnacles Saturday afternoon. Greg believes the cross is at least 20 ft. tall and made out of a 10 by 10 inch timber.

"Timing is everything. Had we been 10 minutes before or 10 minutes later and it wouldn’t have came up to us.," Greg told FOX 17 News. "We think it was divine timing."

Standing beside him when they noticed the cross washed up on the shore, Greg's wife told him, "You realize this is a sign."

The couple said it was nothing short of a spiritual experience for their family.

"We stood there and just stared at it and each other for quite a few minutes in awe," Greg said. "We had noticed all the barnacles and knew it had been in the ocean for quite a while, so why would the sea finally cough it up at just that moment if it wasn’t meant for us to find it?"

Now the cross continues to sit in front of the beach resort while vacationers try to determine its origin. Greg said most people believe it washed up from an island after a possible hurricane.

Wherever the giant cross may be from, Greg said he wants to make the connection.

"That is the most important thing to us, is to find out what kind of journey this thing took," Greg said.

Anyone with information on the washed up cross has been asked to contact him:
