SYRACUSE N.Y. (WSTM) - Sources close to the investigation say Coach Jim Boeheim of Syracuse, New York's basketball team hit and killed a person who got out of their car after another crash late Wednesday night.

The crash happened just before 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday on I-690 Eastbound just before the Thompson Road exit.

Investigators say two cars were involved in an accident and the passengers got out of their vehicles. Boeheim, who was driving, hit and killed one of the people who had gotten out of their car after the initial accident.

Sources tell us the man's car was partially in the driving lane when he got out of the vehicle.

Sources say Boeheim called 911, and was fully cooperative with investigators. They tell us this "seems to be a tragedy."

The highway was shutdown at South Midler Ave. for several hours while crews investigated the crash.

We have reached out to Syracuse University leaders for comment and have not heard back.

Earlier Wednesday night Syracuse basketball had a game at the Carrier Dome against Louisville. The game ended around 9 p.m.
