A 29-year law enforcement veteran is being hailed as a hero hours after he was shot and killed trying to stop a gunman inside a country music bar in Northern California.
The body of Sgt. Ron Helus received an escort from a hospital to a funeral home on Thursday. Thousands lined the route including fellow police officers and firemen who saluted the hearse as it drove by.
Administrators announcing Helus' death early Thursday said the officer was scheduled to retire from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office in 2019.
