Dog Days of Summer pet adoption grows larger each year

On Saturday, Northeast State Community College hosted the third annual Dog Days of Summer pet adoption event.

The event is hosted by the college's Office of Scholarship Programs and Student Needs.

It brings together several area shelters to try and find their cats and dogs forever homes.

Appalachian Animal Hospital was on hand to give pets necessary vaccinations.

"As of late, we've had a lot of stories in the media about overcrowding at the shelters. We know that that's always going to be an issue. So, we wanted to get a volunteer event together where we could really help out in the community," said event organizer Joshua Johnson.

He says the first year of the event, they had 45 attendees and nine animals adopted.

Then the second year, they had more than 150 attendees and about a dozen animals adopted.

He hopes this year's event continues to grow.
