Those battling serious illnesses at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport received a special visit and gift on Friday.

Knoxville-based 818 Ministries donates hundreds of handmade hats each year to patients across the state. Each hat comes with a handwritten letter of encouragement. They carried out their mission with volunteers dressed as special characters visiting patients.

"When I originally started 818, I had no idea that the Lord would put on my heart really pediatrics and the way that he has and so it's been really cool that I get the opportunity to go in different hospitals and dress up as different characters and impact patients in a different way than just dropping hats off," said 818 founder and chief hat maker Rebecca Dotson.

The Kingsport visit marked the occasion of the 950th hat given to a special patient by the group.

Dotson created the organization in 2014 shortly after her mother's breast cancer diagnosis. For more information of their mission, click here.
