One dead following house fire in Carter County

UPDATE, 4:11 p.m.

Sheriff Dexter Lunceford confirmed a female resident died in a fire Monday morning at a home located on Roan Mountain.

The victim, who has not been identified, lived alone at the house located off Cove Creek Road. The body was found near a wood stove in the kitchen area and Luneford said the blaze appears to be accidental.

The remains have been sent to a medical examiner for an autopsy.

A woman is dead following a fire at a home in the Roan Mountain section of Carter County Monday morning.

Authorities confirmed to News 5 that the body was found in the remains of the house located off of Cove Creek Road. Fire crews arrived at the location just after 7 a.m. and the home was already partially destroyed from the flames.

The name of the victim has not been released. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the State Fire Marshal's Office are assisting local officials with the investigation.
