UPDATE: Triple murder suspect hospitalized after suicide attempt

UPDATE, 2:00 p.m.

Washington County, Tennessee Sheriff Ed Graybeal said in a report issued Wednesday afternoon that murder suspect Derrick Benjamin Sells attempted suicide in his cell.

A detention officer and staff nurse discovered Sells with a cut to his throat just after midnight, the report said. They treated the inmate until EMS crews arrived and transported him to a Johnson City hospital.

Graybeal also said that Sells injury was serious but not life threatening. He is expected to be in court Thursday for an arraignment hearing.

Sells is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Boones Creek couple Robert and Kyanna Vaughn last month.

The man accused of murdering a Boones Creek couple inside their mobile home last month has been hospitalized.

Derrick Benjamin Sells was scheduled to appear in Criminal Court in Jonesborough for an arraignment Wednesday morning. District Attorney Tony Clark confirmed the suspect's trip to the hospital but would not elaborate on Sells' condition.

The arraignment for Sells has been rescheduled for Thursday, Clark noted.

Investigators arrived at the home of Robert and Kyanna Vaughn in the 600 block of Friendship Court on Dec. 4 and found the couple dead in a bedroom. Their two children, ages 3 and 6, were also at the residence and were unharmed but police said they were likely in the home when their parents were murdered 24 hours earlier.

Kyanna Vaughn was six months pregnant at the time of her death, investigators said. Authorities said Robert Vaughn and the suspect were friends and had spoken to each other on the phone the night of the shootings.

A grand jury indicted Sells, 33, of Fall Branch, on Dec. 18 on numerous charges including three counts of first-degree murder.
