Yellow DOT program alerts EMS workers of medical history

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. - A Tennessee program is helping provide more medical information in the event of an emergency to EMS workers, and it starts with a simple decal.

It's the Department of Transportation's Yellow DOT program. It was approved in 2012, and enrollment sites are being set up throughout the state. If you put one of those yellow dot on your rear window, it informs emergency workers to look for your medical history.

It's not your typical car dcor. It's a sticker that could help save your life. Barry Simmons helps give them out.

"That hour right after a crash is when things might need to be very critical knowledge-wise in what they know about a crash victim," Simmons said. "This will give them that information, which can be the difference between life and death quickly for some of these people."

In a situation that requires emergency personnel, the yellow dot alerts EMS personnel to look for a corresponding yellow folder containing critical medical history in the glove box.

"Getting an accurate medical history in an urgent time frame is beneficent to us," Sullivan County EMS Chief Jim Perry said. "Sometimes the patients are conscious and able to give an accurate account of their medical history and other times they are a little excited or just don't get it right or leave a few things out or might be unconscious and tell us anything at all."

The Brookdale Senior Living Center in Colonial Heights in Kingsport is now a certified enrollment center. The center's executive director, Spring Thompson, knew what the benefit would be for the area because of her own family.

"I have a sister who is very ill and she cannot tell her own medical history. at times, she's transported various people to medical appointments," Thompson said.

She included pictures and doctor information in her sister's packet for those emergency situations.

"She has medical implants," Thompson added. "She has a very critical medical history. Especially if she were in a car accident, there's something that individuals would need to know about her immediately."

Thompson said it will also be a resource for patients who suffer from Alzheimer's.

Brookdale is hosting an enrollment event on Thursday. Anyone can come in and fill out the paperwork. They ask that you RSVP to that event, but they say anyone can come.

They'll also take your picture at the event, so emergency workers will know exactly who the folder belongs to.

The event will be held at their location, formerly Wellington Place of Colonial Heights, at 400 Professional Park Drive.
