VSP: Arrest made in fatal Smyth County hit-and-run
SMYTH COUNTY, Va. —
Virginia State Police has arrested a Marion, Va., man in connection with Sunday morning's fatal hit-and-run crash in Smyth County.
Joseph H. Kestner, 31, has been identified as the driver of the Honda that crashed into a house and killed its resident.
At 9:05 a.m. January 6, Virginia State Police responded to a fatal hit-and-run crash in Smyth County.
A gold 1993 Honda Accord was traveling west on Riverside Road when it ran off the right side of the highway. The Honda crashed into a house in the 500 block of Riverside Road. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. State police with the assistance of the Smyth County Sheriff's Office continues to search for the suspect driver.
Margaret A. Poe, 87, was at home at the time of the crash and was injured as a result of it. She did not survive her injuries and died at the scene. She was the only one inside the residence.
Kestner has been charged with fatal hit-and-run, failure to report a crash, and involuntary manslaughter. He is being transported to the Southwest Virginia Jail in Abingdon.
