Abingdon man arrested on more than a dozen charges after alleged assault on panhandler
Bristol, VA —
An Abingdon man is behind bars tonight on more than a dozen charges after police say he beat a panhandler near exit 7 along interstate 81 in Bristol, Virginia.
At about 12:35 p.m. Monday, a Virginia State Police trooper noticed a shirtless man jump out from the passenger side of a vehicle stopped at the light near exit 7.
They said 60-year-old Victor Asher was armed with a wooden stick, about the size of a baseball bat and began beating an 18-year-old panhandler.
Police said it took several other troopers to take Asher into custody as he refused to cooperate with the trooper.
They said further investigation revealed Asher assaulted the woman driving the vehicle.
He's been charged with three charges of assault on a police officer, domestic assault, malicious wounding, being drunk in public, disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, and illegal possession of a controlled substance.
VSP said a sergeant treated the teenager to a meal at a nearby restaurant, gave him a ride to the nearest bus station and bought him a ticket.
